Cineformat Preservation

Film Preservation and Digital Intermediate.

Film remains the most stable long term image medium ever created.
Yet much of it is deteriorating due to poor storage, handling and outdated digitisation practices.

Cineformat preserves motion picture film with disciplined technical workflows designed for both
cultural preservation and modern distribution.

We combine analogue expertise with advanced digital restoration to protect film heritage
and prepare it for future generations.

Precision Film Scanning

Accurate preservation begins with precise capture. We scan film using controlled transport systems and high resolution imaging to preserve every detail contained in the original negative or print.

Capabilities

• 16mm and 35mm scanning
• 4K and 8K capture workflows
• Log colour capture preserving dynamic range
• Frame stabilisation during capture
• Gentle handling for fragile film stock

Execution Standard

Film is inspected and prepared before scanning. Each reel is evaluated for damage, shrinkage and instability. This ensures the safest possible transfer while preserving maximum image integrity.

Camera DIGITAL RESTORATION

Restoration and Image Recovery

Film elements accumulate scratches, dust, flicker and mechanical damage over time. Restoration removes these defects while protecting the original character of the image.

Capabilities

• Dust and scratch removal
• Image stabilisation
• Flicker correction
• Grain balancing
• Frame repair for damaged elements

Execution Standard

Restoration is performed with restraint. The goal is not to alter the film, but to recover the image as faithfully as possible to its original appearance.

Edit COLOUR RECONSTRUCTION

Colour Reconstruction

Older film elements often suffer from colour fading or chemical imbalance. Reconstructing colour requires both technical calibration and historical understanding of film stock behaviour.

Capabilities

• Colour correction aligned to original film characteristics
• Dynamic range reconstruction
• Reference matching when original prints exist
• Consistent scene to scene grading

Execution Standard

Colour decisions follow documented workflows and calibrated environments to ensure consistent visual results across the entire film.

Archive folder ARCHIVAL MASTERING

Archival Master Creation

Preservation requires more than scanning. Long term storage demands properly structured digital masters that remain usable for decades.

Capabilities

• Archival master creation in high resolution formats
• Preservation friendly codecs and containers
• Complete metadata documentation
• Structured storage and backup preparation

Execution Standard

Each archival master includes technical documentation describing capture settings, restoration steps and file specifications.

Image folder FILM OUT AND REVERSE INTERMEDIATE

Film Out and Reverse Intermediate

Digital productions sometimes require transfer back to film for archival storage or specialised projection environments.

Capabilities

• Digital to 35mm film output preparation
• Reverse intermediate workflows
• Film print mastering for archival purposes

Execution Standard

We prepare film output masters with precise colour and exposure calibration to ensure accurate reproduction on film stock.

Globe CROSS CONTINENTAL EXECUTION

A Cross Continental Preservation Network

Three Continents.
One Standard.

Cineformat operates preservation workflows across three locations.

- Africa supports scanning and restoration.
- Asia supports engineering and workflow development.
- Europe supports calibration and complex mastering.

All projects follow one structured technical framework.
